General Information of Shannan
Shannan Prefecture in Tibetan Autonomous Region of China, is situated
at the south of Gangtise and Nyanchen Tangla ranges, along the middle and lower
reaches of yarlung Tsangpo River. It is close to India and Bhutan in the south,
Lhasa in the north, Nyingchi in the east and Shigatse in the west. The whole
prefecture comprises 12counties, covering an area of 79,300 square km. It has
population of 318,000, of which 96%are Tibetan.
Shannan has been crowned with the fame of "The Origin of Tibetan Nationality
". The beautiful myth that tells of a sacred monkey mated with an ogress to
produce the earliest member of the Tibetan race was born at the sacred Mt. Gongpori
of Tsedang. Hence this mountain has become a sacred place for pilgrimage and
for honoring ancestors.
Shannan, with its ling established historical culture, occupies an important
place in Tibetan politics and history. During the long years, Tsedang has had
many "first", for instance, the first king Nyatri Tsenpo, the first palace yumbu
Lhakang, the first temple Tradruk, the first cropland Syaridotang, the first
Tibetan Opera Pakhapu and the first Buddhist scripture Pangkong Chagya are all
credited to Shannan. Here is also the place where king Singtsan Gampo united
the whole Tibet and once lived with Poncess Wencheng. The Tangka made and embroidered
by Princess Wencheng herself is still kept in Tradruk Temple, which is a great
treasure house of culture and art.
Shannan possesses the only Tibetan key state-level scenic area Yarlung River
Scenic Area. There are 7 scenic areas and 58 scenic sports in the area. The
attractive scenes, the different folkways, the sacred mountains and lakes are
well-known throughout the whole China. For example, three of four Sacred Lake
Lhamo Nhatso are in Shannan.
Shannan is actually a valley area in the south of Tibet. Here can be the
first stop for travelers to acclimatize to the animate of Tibet, with the convenient
traffic and telecom, Shannan has become the focus of world traveler's attention.
The present largest International Airport of Tibet is in Shannan, which is 97KM
away from Tsedang. Shannan, with rich cultural heritage, magnificent landscape
and unique folklore, is expecting the honor of the arrival of all friends.
